CHAPTER 10

EL SLIPPED BACK into the house without being noticed. Theo gave her a nod and helped her slip through into the kitchen and grab a little food before she snuck to her bedroom. He was kind but couldn’t afford to lose his job. El knew he would have done more for her if he could. He had often helped her finish her chores so that she wouldn’t get in trouble—especially when she was younger—or would find ways to let her nap or cover for her when she needed a break. All these years, Theo had been a lifesaver. She should add him to her list of resources, a person who might be able to help her escape.

Or she should if she thought there was even any point in trying. Patricia’s hold over her was impossibly tight. Her grid ranking meant she couldn’t just walk out and tell someone—they would say she was lying, untrustworthy, ungrateful. That she should appreciate all Patricia had done for her. Patricia’s grasp was so tight, even random strangers—like Mary Alice—thought she was a kind woman, agreeing to take care of El for all of these years.

El flipped off her light and lay back. Tomorrow would be horrible, of that she had no doubt. She would be punished for Chet’s thoughtless kindness. She would be accused of complaining about her home life, besmirching Patricia’s good name, insulting the family.

Chores upon chores would be piled onto her.

She would be forbidden from going to the machine shop.

Prevented from even touching the simulator.

At least Patricia had stopped the beatings, El reflected.

She closed her eyes and fell into a fitful sleep.
